5 Steps To Receiving Feedback

We handled giving feedback in an earlier article.  But what about when you're on the other end?

When receiving feedback, keep these 5 steps in mind:

  1. Listen without interrupting. Let the other person make their point, regardless of how much you want to jump in.
  2. Avoid becoming defensive or flatly contradicting the feedback. Knowing what they think is helpful to you, whether or not you agree.
  3. Acknowledge the giver's point of view, and try to understand where the feedback is coming from.  Why is this person saying what they're saying?
  4. Thank him or her for giving you honest feedback. Whether or not you agree with it, this person has taken the time to give you suggestions for an area where you could improve.
  5. Finally, consider how (or whether) the feedback applies. While not all feedback may be valid, giving it some serious thought could unearth skill deficiencies that, corrected, could make you a much happier and/or more effective person and employee.
