5"Why are some companies more successful and more profitable than others?"
By Robert Morris

It is at least theoretically possible for an organization to have full engagement of its workforce and that any one of those involved is always fully engaged. That said, I view full engagement as an on-going process to achieve a strategic objective rather than as a destination that, once reached, ends the process. Presumably Brian Tracy agrees. As with other outstanding business books, this one answers a very important question: "Why are some companies more successful and more profitable than others?" As is also true of most of Tracy's other books, this one offers observations, insights, and recommendations that are research-driven, with experience including Tracy's wide and deep associations with hundreds (thousands?) of all manner of organizations. Also, he quickly identifies the "what" of full engagement, then devotes most of its attention to the "why" and "how" of initiatives to help those who read it to "inspire, motivate, and bring out the best in [their] people."

Note: I wholly agree that supervisors can inspire those for whom they are responsible but concluded long ago that motivation must be self-generated.

Credit Tracy with skillful use of reader-friendly devices that consolidate and highlight key points. For example, the provision of an "Action Exercises" at the conclusion of each chapter to facilitate adoption. Also, these...all included within the first four chapters:

o Twenty-five Ideas to Create a Peak Performance/Happy Work
o Environment (Pages 12-24)
o Four Ways to Change (24-25)
o How to Build Companies That Inspire Self-Ideal (53-56)
o Three Essentials of a Peak Performance Workplace (64-66)
o Four Keys to Effective Listening (91-93)

Tracy is obviously a world-class empiricist and diehard pragmatist, almost totally obsessed with understanding what works, what doesn't, and why...then sharing it with various audiences. His approach is informal but highly-disciplined. His role is that of a personal mentor/coach to each reader. Tracy would be the first to agree, however, that it would be a fool's errand for any reader to attempt to accept - without scrutiny -- all of his assertions, and, to attempt to adopt all of his recommendations - without modification.

5A Great Resource
By John Chancellor
Full Engagement is a wonderful guide which will help you improve your business and your life. If you are familiar with Brian Tracy's teachings you will find this book contains many of the lessons he has been teaching for over 30 years. There are some new and improved ideas in this book. And for those who have read the lessons before, it is still worth reading to be reminded of the importance of putting the lessons into practice.

The book is very easy to read, the lessons are clearly explained and at the end of each chapter are a number of action steps which give direction on how to implement the teachings. These action steps are a terrific way to get the most value from this book. Simply reading the book will not improve your performance.

The book is primarily directed toward managers. Most of the book talks about how to get your employees/team members fully engaged. However he does a very good job of showing how these lessons apply to an employee or a sole entrepreneur.

If you are a new manager or just starting out with your new business, this could be the most important tool you could acquire to help your business grow. Brian has spent over 30 years teaching and training individuals and companies how to be more successful. He has condensed all his teachings into this book. His teachings are based on his real world experience as a trainer and his own experience as a manager and later a business owner.

In the final chapter of the book he gives you 17 principles for being a better manager. The first and most important principle, for you as a person, manager or business owner is to gain clarity. If you hope to accomplish your goals in business and life, you must be extremely clear about the results you want.

Time and time again, throughout the book Brian drives home the point to get clear, focus on results and concentrate on doing those tasks which will give the best results. He gives some very helpful exercises on how to decide the most important tasks you should focus on.

If you will read the book carefully and do all the action steps, you will greatly improve your business and your life. Keep the book handy and refer to it often. Reading the 17 principles weekly or even monthly would be a great exercise.

This is a great resource for anyone looking to improve their performance in business or in life.

4Another classic
By Jim Estill
Brian Tracy is one of the most prolific motivational speakers of our day. He really understands psychology. He bases his work on research. This book like his others is no disappointment.

The statistics of engagement are staggering and the return from increasing the engagement of staff is huge. Salary costs are usually the biggest expense for most businesses. Increasing the efficiency of this spend makes total sense.

The book starts with a concept that happiness increases engagement. He has a list of 25 ways to be spread happiness. Things like smile more, praise generously when warranted, listen etc.

People work better if they have high self esteem. A great leader works hard on increasing the self esteem of their staff. Poorly run organizations put in place systems that actually hurt self esteem by trying to catch people doing things wrong instead of things right.

The final chapter has 17 principles to be the best you can be. It starts with "Clarity of purpose" and moves through such things as "single minded focus" and "commit to quality in everything".

It is a good book for anyone wanting to inspire through engagement.
