A review study published in the current issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion states that Qigong and Tai Chi, exercises which originated from China centuries ago, have significant benefits for physical and mental health. Qigong is a term used to describe exercises which promote the flow of qi (pronounced "chee") or energy in the body. Tai Chi refers to very specific series of movements which require discipline, flexibility and muscle control to master. The authors of the study found that practice of these exercises improved cardiovascular health, immune function, mental health and overall quality of life. Practitioners also had improved balance and reduced risk of falls. While yoga is still a more popular form of low-impact exercise, more and more Americans are embracing Qigong and Tai Chi as alternatives. Coincidentally, I attended my first Tai Chi class last week. Believe me, it's harder than it looks and I definitely broke a sweat by the end of the hour.
