One reason that so much writing about being a good boss is so unhelpful is that it concentrates on traits instead of behavior. A "trait" is a state of being. Behavior is something you say or do. Learning the traits of great bosses may be interesting, but it doesn't get you from where you are to where you want to be. For that you need to change your behavior.
So when you study great bosses, pay attention to what they DO to get results. The odds are that if you do the same things you will get similar results.
Just to be clear, I really don't think you're stupid, but using the that word in the headliune let me piggy-back on James Carville's famous line from the 1992 presidential election campaign.
