Lavender Can Be An Effective Antifungal

Lavender has purported antimicrobial properties and is used in alternative medicine on a variety of skin conditions, including infections, burns, cuts, acne, hair loss and general inflammation. Now, new research published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology demonstrate its antifungal properties. Lavender oil was found to be lethal to a range of fungal strains that often cause skin infections such as ringworm, thrush and athlete's foot. The essential oils distilled from the Lavandula genus of lavender plants were able to destroy fungi by damaging their cell membranes. The exact mechanism of how it does this is still under investigation. Furthermore, this research has yet to be translated onto human subjects, so don't stock up on your essential oils quite just yet.
