Use The STAR Technique For Difficult Interview Questions

Answering difficult job interview questions requires a structured approach, where delivery and detail count for everything.

We have recorded improvements in excess of 50% in the success rate of candidates using this technique at interview, over those who don't.

STAR stands for:

  • Situation
  • Task
  • Action
  • Result

How To Shine With STAR

The trick to making the STAR technique work is to weave your answers to behavioural and competency interview questions into concise stories with a beginning, middle and end - starting with a brief introduction outlining the situation.

So, in answer to a question asking you, for example, to describe a time you dealt with pressure in a work situation, you might say:

  • Situation - I was working as part of a team of six developing a series of web platforms for the first of a series of company website launches. We were confident we’d complete the project to schedule but then two team members, including our manager, fell seriously ill.

You can now move onto the task section of your answer which should outline the job you faced; setting out the goals and the objectives for your team and company.

  • Task - The team was suddenly under serious pressure to meet a deadline on which a substantial marketing budget had already been invested. We were required to meet the original deadline with depleted personnel and an obvious lack of leadership.

The most detailed part of your answer will be the action, where you describe how you dealt with the task. Here you will detail your use of available resources, the personal and relevant skills you brought to the table and your direct involvement.

  • Action - I was up-to-speed with all aspects of the project and confident in my programming skills through prior experience and recent training, so I put myself forward as team leader for the remainder of the project. I was able to draw on my technical skills and on the team leadership skills I’d acquired from captaining a rowing crew throughout university. I motivated the team by arranging incentives including a bonus on completion and two Thai food evenings in the office. The incentives enabled us to effectively broaden our own time frame on the project and run checks on the sites prior to presentation to the board.

The action part of your answer should leave your interviewer in no doubt as to what it was you did, how you did it and why you did it.

You will now need to wrap up your answer by outlining the result of your actions. This is where you get to demonstrate the benefits those actions had for the company/team and for your own development.

  • Result  - Under my leadership the team brought the project in on time. The launch was a resounding success. The team were congratulated on a job well done and I was promoted to the position of group head.

Use STAR To Keep Your Audience Enthralled

As with all good storytelling, brevity and clarity are key to answering interview questions. Try to deliver your STAR answers in well under three minutes and always keep it positive, upbeat and free from heavy jargon.

At all stages of the STAR technique you should strive to present your answer in such a way as to highlight your relevant skills and suitability to the role on offer.

Rehearsals Are Key

We recommend all candidates prepare five STAR stories, based on achievements relevant to the key selection criteria the role requires. Also think of how you can present your answers and achievements to suit different questions. For example, the scenario used above could be used to prove your team work and project management proficiencies as well as your ability to handle pressure.

Ideally you should aim to fit your five most significant career achievements to date within the required job competencies. Don’t be too literal with your answers, and use the interview process and key selection criteria as an opportunity to profile your successes.

Speak With No Fear: Go From A Nervous, Nauseated, And Sweaty Speaker To An Excited, Energized, And Passionate Presenter By Mike Acker (Summary)

Speak With No Fear: Go From A Nervous, Nauseated, And Sweaty Speaker To An Excited, Energized, And Passionate Presenter By Mike Acker
Hardcover
Also Available Formats :- Kindle, Audiobook, Paperback

The Main Idea

Does the thought of speaking to a large group (or even a small group) cause you to break out in a sweat? If so, welcome to the human race. Everyone has a fear of public speaking at first. You're not alone.

However, you don't have to stay that way forever. There are 7 strategies you can use to overcome your fear and ultimately become a polished public speaker. It won't happen instantaneously, but if you keep working at it, you will get there.

Whatever your situation currently is, I understand. I used to get sweaty, nervous, and nauseated even to small groups. Now, I have had the chance to speak to 3,000 people at civic engagements, lead leadership workshops, speak to several thousand people at a megachurch, engage audiences of kids and youth, speak at churches of many sizes, and many more events. I promise you that you can do this. You can speak with no fear. Where you are is not where you have to be. Don't wait any longer. One day turns into one week. One week turns into a month, into a year, into a decade, and into a lifetime. Don't let life pass you by while you wrestle with the same old enemy of fear. Do something about it. Take action today. Begin to read. Begin to learn these strategies. Start now. - Mike Acker

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the mastery of it. - Mark Twain

Seven Strategies To Master Public Speaking

STRATEGY #1 — UNCOVER & CLEAN THE WOUND. Don't try and cover your public speaking fears with band-aids. It won't work. Instead, uncover and then clean your wound. Figure out why you're nervous and deal with it.

STRATEGY #2 — IMAGINE THE WORST. Imagine that everything goes wrong in your upcoming speech and it's an utter disaster. Figure out how you will deal with your emotions in advance and control the situation.

STRATEGY #3 — YOU BE YOU, GROW INTO YOU. Accept that you're going to deliver your speech in a way which aligns with your personality and get comfortable with that. Use that trait as an integral part of your speech.

STRATEGY #4 — SPEAK TO ONE. Remind yourself that a crowd is really just a large number of individuals. If possible, meet some of them and then when you go on stage, talk to those few you know.

STRATEGY #5 — IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU. The people in the crowd are less concerned about you than you may realize. Even when you're speaking, they're not thinking about you so relax. Serve them without being worried.

STRATEGY #6 — CHANNEL THE POWER. Don't try and get rid of all nervousness when you speak. Instead, channel your stress and nervousness into obsessing over creating a positive outcome. That's a worthwhile aim.

STRATEGY #7 — BE IN THE MOMENT. Enjoy any and all public speaking opportunities you get. Be in the moment rather than worrying about what went wrong in your buildup. Have fun and you'll ace it.

Summaries.Com Editor's Thoughts

Ah, public speaking. Some people love it but for most people it's the stuff of nightmares and cold sweats in the middle of the night. Mike Acker makes the point that it doesn't have to be that way, and I agree.

The thing I liked most about this book is it's down-to-earth and has some very practical strategies anyone can use. I liked the underlying message that you can do something about your fears rather than simply accepting they are there. In the current business environment where podcasts, YouTube channels and social media all have huge reach, finding your voice and projecting it is becoming more important than ever before.

This is a short book which gets to the point, but the ideas it explains have a very long shelf life. Great book.

Excerpt & Encouragement

Before You Begin: Believe

I welcome you to jump into the strategies in the book. Just promise me that you won't start with doubt.

Doubt deters you from taking strategies seriously. Doubt erodes confidence. Doubt makes truth seem like lies. Doubt will feed your fear and give you more speaking nightmares. So you have to let go of your doubts and start believing in yourself. A BIG part of overcoming fear is believing in yourself. Begin with belief.

"Where You Are Is Not Where You Have To Be."

This sentence was included in my introduction. Do you believe it? Do you believe in yourself? At least some part of you does. Otherwise you wouldn't have picked up this book! Let's build on this belief. Take a moment and whisper the immortal words from the classic story, The Little Engine That Could, "I think I can. I think I can. I think I can."

Are you struggling? Do you find yourself dwelling on negative thoughts? "It's not going to work for me.""I'm just not a good speaker.""I'm an introvert. I just can't.""I've tried in the past, and it didn't work."

If you are struggling to believe, will you suspend disbelief while you read?

Read this book as a believer, not as a skeptic. Education will often teach you to think critically. Keep that mindset for work and academics. This book needs you to think receptively. Trade in any negativity for positivity. Think well of yourself. Believe in yourself.

Remember: "Where you are is not where you have to be."

Act on these strategies and set yourself up for success in speaking, in your career, and in your life:

The Seven Strategies

1.    Uncover & Clean the Wound
2.    Imagine the Worst
3.    You Be You
4.    Speak to One
5.    It's Not About You
6.    Channel The Power
7.    Be in the Moment

Secrets Of Sand Hill Road: Venture Capital And How To Get It By Scott Kupor (Summary)

Secrets Of Sand Hill Road: Venture Capital And How To Get It By Scott Kupor
Hardcover
Also Available Formats :- Kindle, Audiobook, Paperback

The Main Idea

In 2017, US-based venture capital (VC) firms injected around $84 billion into companies and startups. The most prestigious and successful of those VC firms operate in Silicon Valley, and the most influential of those headline VC firms have their offices on Sand Hill Road — not too far away from Stanford University.

So what are the secrets of securing venture capital?

To access venture capital funding, you have to know and take into account:

  1. How venture capital works
  2. The necessary company formation decisions
  3. The process of negotiating with VC firms
  4. The constraints you will be working under
  5. The plan for how returns will be realized

Align your funding requirements with the VC life cycle, and you have a shot at securing the funding you need to grow a company. Miss that alignment and there's no realistic chance that a venture capitalist will be able to work with you. As in most things in business, timing is everything.

Entrepreneurs and VCs are not on opposing sides, the way one soccer team tries to crush another in the World Cup. Rather, we are partners, and once we agree to work together (and even if we don't), we are on the same side. What we share is a desire to create benign businesses, see them have an impact on and improve the world, and together realize some financial benefit along the way. We need you. We need your ideas and your guts. We need your companies and your commitment to growth. I hope to shine a light on how VC works and why, in order to create more and better company-building opportunities

… Scott Kupor

The Venture Capital Life Cycle

1. Learn how venture capital works . Every VC firm has investors who fund them, and incentives and constraints which are specified by those investors. To understand how VCs make their decisions, start by understanding the motivations of the firm's backers first.

2. Make good formation decisions . Whether or not you can seek VC funding will depend to a large extent on the decisions you make when founding your enterprise. Make sure you make all the right allowances when you form your company, otherwise VC funding won't be an option in the future.

3. Understand the VC finance process . Pitching VC firms is one challenge but ultimately any negotiations will center around the term sheet, the Magna Carta of the VC industry. Know what to include in a good term sheet and you're ready to hunt bear when you talk to VC firms.

4. Operate to agreed constraints . Any funding a VC firm provides will come with a set of economic and governance constraints. Make certain everyone knows and abides by those constraints, particularly your board of directors who will be at the coalface of compliance.

5. Plan how returns will flow back . Money has to ultimately flow back to VC firms (and their backers) in order for the VC cycle to keep operating. Plan how that will happen in your case in great detail. If enough money doesn't make it through the full cycle, the financing hydrant will dry up and disappear.

Summaries.Com Editor's Thoughts

This week's summary focuses squarely on venture capital and what's involved. It's an interesting topic — although admittedly it will appeal more to entrepreneurs than to salespeople or managers. I've always heard great stories of venture capitalists who put $2 or $3 million into early-stage companies like Facebook or Amazon and end up with a stake which is worth $1 billion or more but how that happens has always just been a mystery. Were they just lucky? Do they invest in lots of companies but only talk about their success stories, not their failures?

Secrets of Sand Hill Road fills that gap and talks about venture capital from both sides of the equation. It explains how venture capital funds work and the pressure venture capitalists are in from their limited partners to generate results. I also liked learning about the highly structured way potential investments are negotiated including the written term sheets which put on paper how an investment would work. There are good business practices to pick up on here and run with even if you never come face-to-face with a venture capitalist.

Their track record suggests venture capitalists are doing something right. Secrets of Sand Hill Road is a great insight into the way they think and make investment decisions. Well worth a read.

A Wall Street Journal Bestseller!

What are venture capitalists saying about your startup behind closed doors? And what can you do to influence that conversation?

If Silicon Valley is the greatest wealth-generating machine in the world, Sand Hill Road is its humming engine. That's where you'll find the biggest names in venture capital, including famed VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, where lawyer-turned-entrepreneur-turned-VC Scott Kupor serves as managing partner.

Whether you're trying to get a new company off the ground or scale an existing business to the next level, you need to understand how VCs think. In Secrets of Sand Hill Road, Kupor explains exactly how VCs decide where and how much to invest, and how entrepreneurs can get the best possible deal and make the most of their relationships with VCs. Kupor explains, for instance:

   • Why most VCs typically invest in only one startup in a given business category.

   • Why the skill you need most when raising venture capital is the ability to tell a compelling story.

   • How to handle a "down round," when startups have to raise funds at a lower valuation than in the previous round.

   • What to do when VCs get too entangled in the day-to-day operations of the business.

   • Why you need to build relationships with potential acquirers long before you decide to sell.

Filled with Kupor's firsthand experiences, insider advice, and practical takeaways, Secrets of Sand Hill Road is the guide every entrepreneur needs to turn their startup into the next unicorn.

Editorial Reviews

"Worth far more than its cover price... I wish I'd had it available to me when I was first looking for startup funding."
Eric Ries, bestselling author of The Lean Startup and The Startup Way, from the foreword

"As someone who’s helped a small company become a huge, valuable company, I know firsthand the power of the startup ecosystem and entrepreneurship. This book is the definitive book on navigating VC as part of that."
Eric Schmidt, former executive chairman and CEO of Google; technical advisor, Alphabet

“I’ve observed thousands of founders and thought a lot about what it takes to create something important and to achieve outlier success. Kupor’s book takes founders who want to do both through everything from how VCs raise money and evaluate deals, to how to think about term sheets and set up boards. It’s a valuable resource for any founder who wants to work with VCs.”
Sam Altman, partner and president Y Combinator; co-founder of OpenAI

“As more and more startups consider an IPO, it is exciting for us to play a part in giving millions of new investors the opportunity to share in the value and future growth of these seminal companies. But it all begins with the early investors who ‘venture’ into uncharted territory to help make these companies possible, by backing the entrepreneurs behind them. Secrets of Sand Hill Road is the definitive guide to how to engage the VC community, including governance and other best practices in a startup’s journey to a successful public company.
Adena Friedman, President and CEO of Nasdaq; former managing director and CFO, Carlyle Group

“From acquiring startups, to leading a company, to working to select the next leader of an iconic company, I’ve seen it all. It’s become clear to me that startups drive the kind of innovation that big companies can’t easily do. Secrets of Sand Hill Road provides a useful overview for the next generation of leaders seeking to start such companies.”
John W. Thompson, chairman, Microsoft; former CEO of Symantec

“Despite its explosive growth, the world of venture capital remains mysterious to many entrepreneurs seeking funding and to the public more generally. Scott Kupor provides an informative account of the way in which these investors select and nurture young companies.
Josh Lerner, head of the Entrepreneurial Management Unit at Harvard Business School

Andreessen Horowitz’ managing partner Scott Kupor has written an indispensable guide for anyone with a big idea and an even bigger dream. Just as important, he gives the best explanation yet for policymakers about how entrepreneurs and venture capital together create the deep magic that generates technological progress, economic growth, and a better world for more people.

One Million Followers: How I Built A Massive Social Following In 30 Days By Brendan Kane (Summary)

One Million Followers: How I Built A Massive Social Following In 30 Days By Brendan Kane
Hardcover
     Also Available Formats :- Kindle

The Main Idea

Each and every day, more than 60 billion messages are sent out on digital platforms. It is now feasible for anybody (not just celebrities) to build an authentic following of one million people or more on digital platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and LinkedIn.

So how do you build a successful multi-media brand? The key to scaling a massive audience in the shortest time possible is to produce digital content and then test and measure how people are responding to your content in real time. Specifically, your mantra should be:

Hypothesize < --- > Test < --- > Pivot

Pivot < --- > Hypothesize < --- > Test

Hypothesize — what kind of story, format or theme will engage your target audience.

Test — quickly produce a low-cost version of your concept or message and learn everything you can about what does and does not work.

Pivot — invest in it further if your hypothesis turns out to be correct. If it's disproved instead, quickly pivot to a new format, a new story, or a new theme, and repeat the process.

The great point is you don't have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to social media. Look around and borrow ideas from what has worked for other people. Test and learn.

If you have something to offer, and you know how to leverage digital and social platforms, you can reach millions, if not hundreds of millions, of people around the world in no time. It's how social influencers have taken off and in some cases have become bigger than mainstream celebrities in just a matter of years. With the right strategies, nearly anyone can build a massive global audience.

Brendan Kane

After ten years of helping celebrities, brands, and corporations grow big audiences, I started to wonder if my ideas and techniques could be applied to someone starting from scratch. So I came up with an experiment to determine whether a person who had never been on television, in a film, or in print could amass a large following around the world. So in June 2017 I got to work on my little experiment. I put into practice everything I had learned from more than ten years of digital and social media experience. To my amazement, by July — in less than a month — I had generated over one million followers in more than a hundred countries. If I can do it, you can do it. - Brendan Kane

How To Gain One Million Followers

1. Hypothesize - Build Experiments. Develop a format, story, or theme which you think will engage your target audience around a specific message. Do this quickly and then start testing how you can catch & hold people's attention.

2. Test - Validate and Learn. Produce a low-cost version of your concept or message, which can be tested and validated. Learn everything you can about what does and does not work from the tests you run.

3. Pivot - Invest More or Pivot. If your hypothesis is shown to be correct, invest in it further and build more content. If it's disproved, repeat the process all over again with a new format, a new story or a different theme.

Brendan Kane has worked with MTV, Skechers, Vice, IKEA and other corporations to advise them on how to grow their digital audiences. He previously managed Lakeshore Entertainment's interactive media strategy where he worked on 16 films, which ultimately generated $685 million at the box office. Brendan Kane has also built platforms for celebrities like Taylor Swift, Rihana, Charles Barkley, Adriana Lim and others. He also served as vice president of digital for Paramount Pictures. Brendan Kane is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago and Augustana College.

Summaries.Com Editor's Thoughts

I must admit, the back story for this book was alluring.

Brendan Kane decided to put his digital marketing expertise to the test by trying to amass one million followers for a no-name with no established following. He realized that he was the ideal candidate for this experiment because he wasn't famous and had never been on TV or done anything society considered especially cool. So he applied his business experience, and lo and behold he generated a million followers in less than a month!

He doesn't spell out how much he spent to achieve that goal, but it's obvious that Facebook advertising was a big chunk of his strategy. Brendan also focused on generating shareable content and getting others to tell their friends — which always has been, after all, the secret sauce of social media marketing.

I was impressed by his suggestion to use Facebook to generate real-time data about how people are responding and then to make changes on the fly. It's almost like building an engine for your jet while you're in the middle of a flight.

Overall, I think this book is worth reading to help you develop the mindset it takes to excel in business today. It's hands-on and specific about the best ways to take advantage of each social media platform.

As Brendan Kane points out: "If I can do it, you can do it". Now that would be the most interesting experiment of all.

Here's your chance to see what major HR technology solutions providers have developed over the last year.

The companies selected to present product demonstrations are:

AllyO – AI-powered AllyO Pulse uses deep workflow automation to engage employees in a text-based conversation—from entrance to exit. HR leaders then use sentiment analytics to drive organizational improvements.

Capacity – The CEO of Capacity, a recent rebrand of Jane.ai, will demo how automation meets the HR function and transforms the way teams do their best work.

iCIMS – Delivered through iCIMS Advanced Communications Suite, iCIMS chat-based online Virtual Career Fairs enable employees to centrally manage the branding, sourcing, candidate and conversation capture of events.

Paychex – With a newly enhanced grid entry view, Paychex Flex® makes payroll and HR simple and flexible. It offers multiple pay entry options within a single platform and is integrated with Paychex’s suite of solutions – including payroll, HR, time and attendance, benefits, and insurance.

Paycom – Helping to accelerate a company’s digital transformation, Paycom’s Direct Data Exchange is a comprehensive analytics tool for employers that provides real-time insights into trends and efficiencies gained through employee usage of HR tech.

Thomsons Online Benefits – The company will demonstrate Darwin™, a purpose-built global benefits platform that reflects 19 years of experience. Darwin can help increase employee engagement through a truly global, personalized benefits offering.

Superfans: The Easy Way To Stand Out, Grow Your Tribe, And Build A Successful Business By Pat Flynn (Summary)

Superfans: The Easy Way To Stand Out, Grow Your Tribe, And Build A Successful Business By Pat Flynn
Hardcover   Also Available Formats :- Kindle

The Main Idea

The name of the game in business today is to create "superfans" — highly engaged customers who will go out of their way to buy and use everything you create. If you can create a tribe of superfans around the world, you future-proof your business.

It's common to assume that superfans only exist for musicians, sports teams, and celebrities, but the reality is pretty much every business can create energized superfans. You just have to create a migration path for customers to move from being casual to active, active to connected, and then connected to superfans.

Build a set of superfans, and no matter what happens, they'll always be there for you. Instead of spending money on ads, spend more time on people. Instead of worrying about the latest growth hacks and strategies, worry about identifying and addressing the biggest pains and problems in your target audience. Instead of figuring out how to optimize your conversion rates, figure out the rate at which you're able to connect authentically with your audience and make them feel special. Fans are important, but superfans are everything. --- Pat Flynn

All you need is 1,000 true fans. They will drive two hundred miles to see you sing. They will buy the super deluxe re-issued hi-res box set of your stuff even though they have the low-res version. They have a Google Alert set for your name. They bookmark the eBay page where your out-of-print editions show up. They come to your openings. They have you sign their copies. They buy the t-shirt, and the mug, and the hat. They can't wait till you issue your next work. They are true fans.

Kevin Kelly, senior editor, WIRED magazine, 2008

How To Gain One Million Followers

Phase 1 - Casual Customers to Active Customers. Your casual audience is the largest segment of your customer base. These are people who buy your product or service at least once because of the value you provide. Your goal with this group is to create a trigger which signals they are in the right place, that there's something special for them, and that they should become part of your active audience — so casuals come back and do more business in the future.

Phase 2 - Active Customers to Connected Customers. Your active audience know who you are, and what you offer. Every time you create something new, they pause and make a decision whether or not to buy. They like your stuff — which is a great start — but they need convincing to act. Your goal with your active audience is to help them become part of your connected community.

Phase 3 - Connected Customers to Superfans. Customers in your connected community hear from you regularly, and also have conversations with each other. Community members start identifying with your mission, and generate the bulk of your comments, feedback, and survey results. These people love what you're doing, and will validate new ideas which will help your business excel and grow. Your goal with your connected community is to fan the flames of their interest so they voluntarily make the transition to superfans.

Summaries.Com Editor's Thoughts

I first heard of Pat Flynn when I came across his website, SmartPassiveIncome.com. There, he describes himself as a "crash test dummy" for online marketing schemes. What really distinguished him, however, was his level of transparency. Every month, he publishes a detailed and itemized profit-and-loss statement that sets out exactly where he makes money and how much, down to the last penny. If you want to know whether or not something works, he can tell you by experience, calculated to two decimal places. I respect that.

In "Superfans", Pat codifies how you go about creating a following of highly engaged customers. I liked his three phase approach; it makes a lot of sense to me. He also gives great practical advice that any small business owner and just about every entrepreneur can put into action. This is a book full of real-world ideas that work.

There's always something appealing about hearing from someone who walks the talk. Pat Flynn certainly meets that criteria. All in all, I think this is a great book for the current business environment where social media is ever present.

Amazon.com

Customers, followers, subscribers.

It's easy to just look at the numbers. How many likes? How many purchases? How many email subscribers?

But as entrepreneurs, we have to remember that there are people behind all that data. People who are looking to us to be a leader, to give advice, and to care. In this dog-eat-dog world, these are the people who are looking for someone who they can trust, and who they know have their best interests in mind.

These are the people, if you connect with them in the right way, who will become Superfans.

Followers may "like" an Instagram post. Customers may buy a product. But "Superfans" will be your biggest supporters. They will promote you and your products because they know you have made a difference in their lives. They will tell their friends. They will send you encouraging emails.

Whether you're a shy YouTuber just starting out, or the leader of a Fortune 500 company, your superfans are out there waiting for you to connect with them.

You don't need to change the entire world to build a successful business; you just need to change someone's world.

People don't become superfans the moment they find you. They become superfans because of the magical moments you create for them over time.
