Three Questions You Must Answer Before Leaving B-School

"Right from Day 1 of my MBA at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, one of my objectives has been to channel my previous consulting experience to deal with the world's most pressing issues," writes Peter Petropoulos, a 2011 MBA candidate and a Net Impact member.

Before returning to school, Petropoulos worked in the consulting industry, where one of his projects was improving the businesses of the thousands of independent owners of Ace Hardware stores across the country.

While this was a great learning experience, he admits, "after five years, I was longing for new challenges."

By the time he started business school, he knew that while he wanted to expand on his consulting experience, he also wanted to work in sustainability.

Regular readers of this blog will remember Petropoulos as one of 51 Climate Corp Fellows who trained with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) last summer and interned with host companies to work on energy efficiency solutions.

Besides the Climate Corps fellowship, which Petropoulos says provided him with critical client-facing experience and the opportunity to show off his analytical toolkit, the two years meant answering three crucial questions to cement his decision to pursue sustainability consulting:

  1. Do I want to work in sustainability?
  2. Do I have the skills for a career in sustainability?
  3. Does my resume complement my passion with work experience?

For professionals looking to work in sustainability — or sustainability consulting — and thinking of going to business school to do so, Petropoulos' experience should provide helpful guidance on how to get the m0st out of your investment — and your decision.
