12 Steps To Supply Chain Visibility: A Clear Goal sidebar

A Clear Goal sidebar

StepstoSupplyChainVisilityImage.jpg Retail logistics experts offered the following suggestions for boosting transparency:

• Establish proactive departments that can develop detailed plans to identify and avoid potential disruptions.

• Focus on increasing data quality so all areas of the supply chain can be analyzed properly.

• Create an information hub that will be a one-stop shop for all information pertaining to shipments.

• Be aware of when your suppliers' labor contracts are expiring.

• Scorecard all trading partners.

• Hold quarterly visibility meetings to share experiences and update monitoring programs and technology and crisis management plans.

• Install active RFID tags on shipments in the cold chain to monitor product temperatures in transit and in DCs.

• Create cross-company visibility with suppliers and other departments in your company to facilitate recalls and inventory management.

• Develop visibility solutions that are flexible enough to accommodate multiple fulfillment models, both domestic and international.

• In addition to location and condition of shipments, track costs like freight, insurance, duties, taxes and other government charges.

• Consider deploying active RFID tags on pallets, boxes and crates to reduce costs -- and encourage suppliers to do the same. Combine RFID and GPS technology to record exact locations and automate data collection.

• Implement route planning software for the entire delivery fleet to reduce mileage, the number of trucks on the road and overtime costs and boost the accuracy of deliveries.
