Americans are living longer than before. However, we still rank 50th in terms of life expectancy worldwide. According to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American babies born in 2009 have an estimated life expectancy of 78.17 years, and those born in 2011 are estimated to live an average of 78.37 years, according to the CIA World Factbook. Monaco, with an estimated 2011 life expectancy of 89.73 years tops the list. Japan rounds out the top five at 82.25 years. Many of the countries with the lowest life expectancies, such as Angola, Botswana, Central African Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa,Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe, suffer from very high rates of HIV/AIDS infection, some as high as 40%. The U.S. infant mortality rate hit a record low of 6.42 deaths per 1,000 live births, a decline of almost three percent from 2008 figures. [via Medical News Today]
