Product Description

In our current economic conditions, job hunters are struggling to attain the 'perfect' job. The Internet has made job hunting easier, but has made getting the job actually harder. It's so easy to apply for jobs today that employers are overwhelmed, often receiving thousands of applications per job opening. Somehow, you have to make sure your application rises to the top of this pile. How? Through your résumé - it's the single most powerful marketing tool you have to showcase your skills and accomplishments. That's what this book is all about. It shows you how to create the best résumé for you and the job you are applying for. There are chapters on the different résumé formats and how to choose the appropriate one for your situation. There's a chapter showing you what belongs in each section of the resume and there's even a chapter on how to showcase your skills in the most powerful way. There is a section on mistakes to avoid and tips for dealing with any problematic areas. Under qualified? Overqualified? Each of these issues and many more are addressed in this book, as is a rarely discussed security issue from posting your resume all over the Internet. There is also a chapter on the power of words that will help you to maximize your writing to make your résumé the most powerful selling tool possible. Even better all this information is presented in a straightforward style that makes this book easy to read and the instructions even easier to follow. Isn't it time you seek out the next step in your life?

Editorial Reviews

From the Author
Resume writing is a topic I have written on many times over the last decade. I currently have one published book on this subject matter.  When I looked to see if I had anything more I could offer on this topic, I realize that today's job hunter, like so much of the world, is looking for a fast solution to a problem.  They needed an easy to read book on just writing/updating their resume.  They may or may not also need information on cover letters, interviews, the job hunt etc.  Our world has become one of instant gratification.  People have information at their fingertips today, they don't want to have to sort through extraneous information in order to find the material they need.  They need to be able to put their fingers on it now!

I decided to give today's job hunters exactly what they need.  I streamlined the information and took each topic and am addressing them fully in individual books.  That's how the Essential Series came about.  For over a decade, I've written on some wonderful topics that are close to my heart, but I haven't been always able to give the topic as much time and attention as I'd like to have.  To that end, I've written Career Essentials: The Resume to fully address how to write or update your resume in simple, easy to follow, steps so that anyone can write a professional looking and sounding resume for themselves.  Your resume is a marketing tool, and like all sales material, it needs to sell a product. In this case, you are the product.
This book shows you which of the main resume formats you should chose depending on what industry you are in, the type of employment history you are coming from and the skills you have to offer.  It shows the different building blocks of each format and addresses what should go into each on your resume.  The book is condensed and chock full of the type of information that's necessary to get the job done.

Like all my books, I work hard to present confusing material in an easy to understand way so that everyone can benefit from reading this book.  I'll be addressing many other topics in a similar way as the Essential Series expands to other topics including gardening, lifestyle, finance and more.
Stay tuned!

5Great Tips for Updating Your Resume
By Amy Atwell
I've been freelancing as a writer for a few years now, but even so, I always try to keep my resumé up to date. I was a little concerned that with new technology, more emailing of resumés to potential employers, etc., that maybe I needed to get some advice. This book had great tips, great examples and answered my questions about how to discuss my freelance experience in a way to sell myself to corporate America. Mayer's suggestions for tailoring each resumé for each potential employer was something I hadn't thought of before. I thought the resumé was all about ME, but now I see it's about proving that I'm the best match for a job. If you're now or soon plan to be actively job seeking, this is a great investment to improve your chances of turning a resumé into an interview.
