New Disease Discovered, Unlikely You Have It

The U.S. National Institutes of Health Undiagnosed Diseases Program has classified a new disease called ACDC, or arterial calcification due to CD73 deficiency. ACDC is an adult-onset condition associated with progressive and painful calcification of arteries of the legs, in addition to the joints of a patient's hands and feet. This occurs because the lack of CD73, a protein found in the body, can lead to calcium deposition in the arteries. ACDC is rare. It's been found in a total of nine individuals from three unrelated families. Currently, there is no treatment for the disease, but with the discovery of the root genetic cause, it's hopeful that scientists can improve the treatment of these patients. The report for this discovery has been published in the February 3rd issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. [via
