About the Author
Bodie Thoene is a writer about whom John Wayne once said, "She has that rare kind of talent that captures the people and the times!"

Born in Bakersfield, California, to a family of Irish and Jewish heritage, the fiery little redhead claimed from an early age she wanted to be a writer. Bodie's goal seemed impossible, however, when midway through grade school it was discovered that she had dyslexia, a learning disability that made it difficult for her to read. Her mother refused to accept that this was a problem they couldn't overcome, and together they worked with a young teacher until at last Bodie could read at grade level and above.

"Both my parents instilled their can-do outlook on life. Reading opened the world to me. I began to write stories of my own."

By the young age of fourteen, Bodie had a job as a stringer reporter for The California Newspaper. "They paid me fifty cents an inch for one article a week. The most I ever made was twelve dollars, but I felt rich!"

Bodie continued her college education as a Journalism-Political Science major in San Jose, California. She covered the Bay-area political unrest of the Vietnam era as an associate for U.S. News and World Report. Her career as a journalist seemed assured, but she says, "I thought to myself that there has to be more to life than writing about riots and peace marches."

Bodie married Brock Thoene during their sophomore year in college. They settled in Waco, Texas, where Brock attended Baylor University. It was here that Bodie began to write fiction out of the stories she gleaned from old Texas cowboys. The birth of their first child did not stop her from writing. "I held her with one arm and typed with the other!"

Publication of The Fall Guy catapulted Bodie into national attention and acclaim. Shortly after that she went to work for John Wayne's Batjac Productions and ABC Television as a writer and researcher, working with the top writers in the motion picture industry. Among those who work with her, she is known as one of the finest character and action writers in the business. Her work is currently featured in American West, Saturday Evening Post, and Smithsonian magazine, as well as other national publications.

Bodie's interest in Israel, which culminated in THE ZION CHRONICLES, stems from her days as a student. In 1978 she spoke to John Wayne about her hope to one day write a novel about the exciting events surrounding the rebirth of Israel. He encouraged her with his reply: "That's one you ought to do. It's the story of the Jewish Alamo!"

With the publication of the first book in THE ZION CHRONICLES The Gates of Zion she was awarded the Gold Medallion Book Award by the ECPA.

Raised in a Christian home, Brock Thoene tells people that he began going to church even before he was born! His close-knit family was early able to impress on Thoene the importance of the family unit.

In his first book, PROTECTING YOUR INCOME AND YOUR FAMILY'S FUTURE, Thoene combines his education and business expertise, introducing biblical guidelines that will assist families in making wise financial decisions.

Using biblical principles to direct his life is important to Brock. Having accepted the Lord as his Savior at the age of seven, he came to a new understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit through the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ while he was in college. A graduate from Cal State University with an MA in Education, Brock and his wife Bodie became active in Campus Crusade and other lay-ministries, including the Campus Life program in Bakersfield.

Brock and his wife Bodie make their ranch home in California. Their family includes four children.

4Insightful, Uplifting, Informative; A Must Have
By A Customer
From "Writer to Writer" helped me immeasurably to focus on from whence comes "my" talent; why I want to write, & how to minimize the negatives.
As one of my first reference tools from the standpoint of another (successful writer, wife, friend, & child of God), I was so encourged in spite of a writer's challenges.
So enjoyable to read you stay in a wonderful flow, get x-cited to pick up your pencil, go to the puter, and begin. Yet, pearls of professional wisdom abound in this book.

Treat yourself... Place it on your desk or night stand & refer, refer, refer.

5Challenging and Inspiring
By Ronie K.
For me, anything by the Thoene's deserves a 5-star rating! However, this simple how-to was very inspiring for me. As a writer, it has challenged me to write more with its simple "assignments" and comments like "How's that for a challenge?" from Bodie. :-) Writers should take every opportunity to expand & improve their talents/writing and this is an encouraging way to do it. And along the road to better writing, you get to know Brock & Bodie on a more personal level! Now, that's a book worth its cost!!

Enjoyed reading the anecdotes which begin each chapter. All points tied in well to the illustrations. A bit dated as it does not deal with publishing in the digital age, but worth the read anyway.

5Sharks Have No Bones
By Elizabeth Honeycreek
I have owned this book for a number of years. I keep it in the bathroom and pick it up at least a few times each week. I always learn something new or remember something I'd forgotten. I would love to see this book re-released in a new edition, though most of it will never get old.
The format makes it very easy to read in short sittings or to extend as interest warrants.

5Encyclopedic science and technological review
By A Customer
Written for even the casual reader on scientific matters, this volume filters out the redundant and the superfluous, wrings the waste from scientific understanding and allows the reader to digest information in intellectual mouthfuls, rather than being goose-fed with more than can be understood. Exceptionally appropriate volume for secondary students as a supplement to cultural literacy studies. Easily implemented for gifted students.

5every american needs to read this book!
By A Customer
I am so thankful Mr. Stewart wrote this book! It is a clear, conscise history that is in turns, overwhelming, sobering and inspiring. Although I was taught some of this in school, it did not have the impact of reading this history in short often 2 paragraph sections. It is a must read for american.

5Excellent reference
By J. Paige
There are many good books of reference on African American history published. However, this one ranks among the best. Well written, user-friendly layout, addressing a broad range of topics, this is recommended for a home or classroom library to teach that all members of a society contribute to its advancement and that our society must be inclusive of all members. Every child can be proud of his or her cultural and historical heritage in a country created by immigrants.

5A Window into American History
By Nate
More than a book of speeches, this solemn and profound book is a window into the history (or should I say plight?) of African Americans. Of many sagacious passages, here are a few highlights:

Fellow citizens, I will not enlarge further on your national inconsistencies. The existence of slavery in this country brands your republicanism as a sham, your humanity as a base pretence, and your Christianity as a lie. It destroys your moral power abroad; it corrupts your politicians at home. It saps the foundation of religion; it makes your name a hissing and a by word to a mocking earth. It is the antagonistic force in your government, the only thing that seriously disturbs and endangers your union. It fetters your progress; it is the enemy of improvement; the deadly foe of education; it fosters pride; it breeds insolence; it promotes vice; it shelters crime; it is a curse to the earth that supports it; and yet your cling to it as if it were the sheet anchor of all your hopes. Oh, be warned! Be warned! A horrible reptile is coiled up in your nation's bosom; the venomous creature is nursing at the tender breast of your youthful republic; for the love of God, tear way, and fling from you the hideous monster, and let the weight of twenty millions crush and destroy it forever!

Frederick Douglas
July 5, 1852

No, I'm not an American. I'm one of the 22 million black people who are the victims of Americanism. One of the 22 million black people who are the victims of democracy, nothing but disguised hypocrisy. So, I'm not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or a flag-saluter, or a flag-waver - no, not I. I'm speaking as a victim of this American system. And I see America through the eyes of the victim. I don't see any American dream; I see an American nightmare.

Malcolm X
April 3, 1964

What will be [your] place in history?
In other eras, across distant lands, this is a question that could be answered with relative ease and certainty. As a servant of Rome, you knew you would spend your life forced to build somebody else's Empire. As a peasant in 11th century China, you knew that no matter how hard you worked, the local warlord might take everything you had - and that famine might come knocking on your door any day. As a subject of King George, you knew that your freedom to worship and speak and build your own life would be ultimately limited by the throne.
And then America happened.
A place where destiny was not a destination, but a journey to be shared and shaped and remade by people who had the gall, the temerity to believe that, against all odds, they could form "a more perfect union" on this new frontier.
And as people around the world began to hear the tale of the lowly colonists who overthrew an Empire for the sake of an idea, they came. Across the oceans and the ages, they settled in Boston and Charleston, Chicago and St. Louis, Kalamazoo and Galesburg, to try and build their own American Dream. This collective dream moved forward imperfectly - it was scarred by our treatment of native peoples, betrayed by slavery, clouded by the subjugation of women, shaken by war and depression. And yet, brick by brick, rail by rail, calloused hand by calloused hand, people kept dreaming, and building, and working, and marching, and petitioning their government, until they made America a land where the question of our place in history is not answered for us, but by us.

None of this will come easy. Every one of us will have to work more, read more, train more, think more. We will have to slough off bad habits - like driving gas guzzlers that weaken our economy and feed our enemies abroad. Our kids will have to turn off the TV sets and put away the video games and start hitting the books.

4Wonderful Collection
By Y. Nall
It was wonderful to find a compilation of full length speeches by African Americans. The speeches span from 1843 to 2005, and include lesser known speakers such as Henry Highland Garnet and Jermain Wesley Loguen, to the renowned Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Du Bois. As interesting and historically significant, if not coincidental, and timely, are speeches by Shirley Chisholm, and Barack Obama. Both were graduates of Columbia University. While Ms. Chisholm was the first African American female to hold office in the House of Representatives, Mr. Obama is the first African American male to hold an office in the Senate, since reconstruction. Additionally, one sought, while the other is seeking to hold the highest office in the United States - President. This compilation is a great addition to any household library.

Product Description

History books are replete with heroic stories of Washington, Jefferson, and Adams, but what of Allen, Russwurm, and Hawley? America's Black Founders celebrates the lesser known but significant lives and contributions of our nation's early African American leaders. Many know that the Revolutionary War's first martyr, Crispus Attucks, a dockworker of African descent, was killed at the Boston Massacre. But far fewer know that the final conflict of the war, the Battle of Yorktown, was hastened to a conclusion by James Armistead Lafayette, a slave and spy who reported the battle plans of General Cornwallis to George Washington.

Author Nancy Sanders weaves the histories of dozens of men and women—soldiers, sailors, ministers, poets, merchants, doctors, and other community leaders—who have earned proper recognition among the founders of the United States of America. To get a better sense of what these individuals accomplished and the times in which they lived, readers will celebrate Constitution Day, cook colonial foods, publish a newspaper, petition their government, and more. This valuable resource also includes a time line of significant events, a list of historic sites to visit or explore online, and Web resources for further study.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5–8—This activity-based guide reveals how African Americans played crucial roles in helping the United States gain its independence. Sanders includes well-known figures such as Phillis Wheatley, Crispus Attucks, and James Forten in her narrative, but also enriches traditional accounts of the period by explaining the contributions of lesser-known patriots. For example, she talks about black troops who fought at Bunker Hill and Valley Forge. She also tells the story of James Armistead Lafayette, a black soldier who spied on Benedict Arnold and Lord Cornwallis. Most of the activities help make this period real to young people. The "Explore Your Family Tree" project gives print and online resources that can help readers discover the roles their own ancestors may have played in the American Revolution. This book also includes information about how African Americans created social and political networks to support one another during the earliest days of the Republic. Sanders makes excellent use of primary sources, providing the original texts of documents and petitions that demanded equal rights and the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. She then explains these documents in language contemporary children will understand. A solid resource for teachers and librarians who wish to engage children in this formative period of American history.—Mary Landrum, Lexington Public Library, KY

From Booklist
Except for the stories of a few legendary figures, the essential role of blacks in America's early history has been largely underrepresented in standard accounts. This lively, illustrated volume fills in that gap. The browsable format includes archival prints and documents, screened biographies, and well-chosen quotes. The double standard about the meaning of "freedom" is a dominant theme in the accessible narrative, which points out that the debates about the rights of man were carried out by people who held slaves. Never simplistic, Sanders' text includes complicated views, such as that of African Americans Richard Allen and James Forten, who opposed the back-to-Africa movement because freed blacks in the U.S. were the strongest fighters for the abolition of slavery. The activities that accompany each chapter are pretty routine, with suggestions to students to pen a patriotic poem, weave a basket, or draw a political cartoon. It is the biographies, including a chapter on the Founding Mothers, that will inspire readers. The appended bibliography of books and Web sites will aid researchers. Grades 6-10. --Hazel Rochman

5Read the stories of men and women of the Revolutionary War era who never made it into other history books.
By Kathryn E. Etier
America's Black Founders by Nancy I. Sanders

Let's get one thing straight. I did not go to school during the Revolutionary War. No, not even grade school. Everything I know about that time period, I learned in school (except whatever I picked up in the movies). Both grade and high school in the 1950's and 60's offered comprehensive courses in United States history, if by comprehensive we accept that United States history was made by white, Christian, men (except for Betsy Ross, but a man told her what to do). In the small grammar school I attended, there was one African-American student. My high school experience was different, and for the first three years I attended a rural high school that served thirteen towns. Kids tended to hang with kids they lived near; friendships were forged at bus stops. Neighborhoods were pretty homogeneous, so most kids were friends with people who were from the same race and class as they. Somehow I managed to end up in a multicultural group of misfits who rode the "detention" bus, which was actually the bus for juvenile delinquents and athletes. In those days that would have been two separate groups. Color didn't put me in the back of the bus, proclivity did. My family moved right before my senior year, and I ended up in the first school system to voluntarily integrate (in the early 60's). Nevertheless, high school history lessons were as white and male as grammar school's were.

America's Black Founders by Nancy I. Sanders is a combination of history and activities designed to teach children about the role of black people--men and women--in early America. It begins with the story of Richard Allen, a seven-year-old boy who was sold as a slave, traces his life, and fittingly ends with his death in his 70's. America's Black Founders is filled with photographs and drawings, portraits and illustrations of many black people who helped pour the foundation of America, as well as reproductions of documents and scores of other pictures, modern and historic. It is a rich, photographic treasury of our past.

Readers are introduced to one memorable person after another, many of whom they have never heard. Wealthy sailmaker James Forten, patriot Prince Estabrook, wealthy Louisiana farmer Marie-Therese Coincoin Metoyer, and founder of the Sunday School Movement Catherine "Katy" Ferguson are but a few of the historic figures profiled. Many of these people were influential members of their communities; some influenced our nation and society. A number were associated with more famous figures such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. It's sad to think that few of these people have appeared in history textbooks. Knowing that fifty years of history have been squeezed in since I was a lass, I doubt that they are getting all that much press now.

Certainly America's Black Founders is a terrific teaching tool for Black History Month, but its appeal is much greater. This is a fascinating collection of vignettes which Sanders has fashioned for readers of all ages. There are relatively few people who couldn't learn something new and interesting within its pages. Were that not enough, there are 21 activities designed to introduce readers to facets of subjects' lives, from stuffing a straw mattress to publishing a newspaper. Crafters will enjoy making a clay pot, weaving a fanner, or making a stamp. Artists can "Draw a Political Cartoon" and "Paint a Historic Picture"; writers can "Write a New Verse for `Yankee Doodle'" and "Pen a Patriotic Poem"; and cooks can "Bake Firecakes," "Cook Pepper Pot Soup," and "Make Homemade Salt." In addition, there are suggestions for young movers and shakers: "Write a Government Official," "Write a Petition," and "Form a Literary Society." There are activities appropriate for every age level that would make great classroom projects, but can also be done at home.

America's Black Founders is a very attractive, large format paperback--an appropriate gift for both children and families. For those interested in history, it is educational without being pedantic. For those of us with ADD, it doesn't need to be read from beginning to end; leaf through it, stopping here and there, and you will be hooked. No matter how little reading time you have, you have enough time to read these profiles, a little at a time.

Bottom Line: Would I buy America's Black Founders Enthusiastically, yes.

5A wonderful resource for educators
By Dorit Sasson
What makes this book hands-on and informative are the anecdotes of our country's black founders that Nancy Sanders brings to life. History can be dry and boring and students need to get excited about our heroes just as writers do. It's clear Nancy Sanders has a natural gift for writing about our nation founders that will engage any class. As a teacher and teacher trainer, I'm always looking how to supplement lessons with hands-on activities that is cross-curriculum. Wonderful addition for any teacher, parent or child's library.

Amazon.com Review
A hilarious introduction to the insect world, On Beyond Bugs will have your preschooler giggling away while learning all kinds of interesting entomology facts. Answering questions like "why do flies buzz?" and "how do bees communicate?" in the musical rhymes long associated with him, Cat in the Hat makes a delightful tour guide. Who else could manage "ants are so strong they can lift things that weigh over ten times their weight and they do it each day?" The sturdy, easy-to-clean-cover makes this book a good choice even for very young children. For those just beginning to read, the phonics-based repetitions are a big help. (Preschool to early reader) --Jill Lightner

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-Fans of Dr. Seuss's favorite feline will enjoy learning through rhymed couplets and cartoonlike illustrations similar to the originals. Each book combines basic facts with interesting trivia to introduce readers to topics that are sure to be of interest. From Bugs: "Here is a riddle/I learned from my mother./How's a skunk and a ladybug/like one another?/When danger is near,/it is easy to tell-/they suddenly give off/a terrible smell!" While the grammar is off, Seussian rhyme is rarely totally correct ("thunk"). In Space, readers learn, "On Venus the weather/is always the same-/hot, dry, and windy,/with no chance of rain." The familiar format and entertaining text are sure to appeal to beginning readers.

"There is a big gap between 'concept' books written for preschoolers and nonfiction that requires fluent reading skills. The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library books introduce beginning readers to important basic concepts about the natural world. They provide the critical foundations upon which complex facts and ideas can eventually be build. In addition, The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library shows young readers that books can be entertaining and educational at the same time. This is a wonderful series!"

5Insects thank Cat in the Hat for good PR
By A Customer
I got this book for a 4 yr old daughter of a friend and she's now intrigued by the insect world. Personally I love how the bumble bee illustration has taught her about how bees communicate through the bumble bee "dance." On the whole, it's nicely educational on an introductory level -- general facts/concepts are taught through illustrations and rhyme. Great for the young ones. Another favorite of mine is the Dr. Seuss Great Big Flap Book.

5Great Fun!
By A Customer
I bought this book for my 4-year old son and he loves it! My husband and I love reading it to him and his baby sister who often also listens along. The book is educational yet great fun to read with its rhyming and fun verses. It teaches without being heavy-handed and even taught us, the parents, a thing or two we didn't know about the insect world! We all enjoy this book tremendously and love the other Cat in the Hat Learning series books as well.

5Love this book
By M. Bohrer
My girls are 5 and 3 and I wanted a non-fiction learning book for them that would still capture their interest. This series of books has really done that. The rhyming keeps them engaged and they ask questions related to the content. I recommend this and the others in the series to parents looking for a good learning book.

5My, Oh My, A Butterfly!
By SDH
I recommend this book and all the others in the series. They are each around 45 pages of fun facts that our grandson, not quite 3 years old, loved. He kept asking for more, and sat through three books in one sitting. He later repeated facts from the books, showing that he was really listening and learning.

5Great book!
By Sedexis
This book is a great addition to our home library! We had ordered live caterpillars and were learning about the life cycle of a butterfly, and this is one of the books that we really enjoyed! This is a great book for school-age kids, but we modified it for preschool age and it was great. I just omitted parts of it to make it shorter and my daughter loves the rhyming and pictures, and there are lots of great butterfly facts!

5Fun, entertaining, educational !
By D. Senal
I read it to my 4.5 year old, its a fairy long book, but because the rhymes are fun and the vocabulary simple, my son stays engaged till the last page! Besides, he and I learn all the fun facts about reptiles... Lots of them! For example, that Iguanas drink salt water: "they have glands that strain salt from salt water, then they sneeze the salt out through their nose"

5You can't go wrong with Cat in the Hat Series!
By Rachel
My son loves every book in the Cat in the Hat Learning Library--and Miles and Miles of Reptiles is certainly no exception. All of the books in the series have the familiar characters that we all know and love, with a writing style reminiscent of Dr. Seuss' contagious ramblings. They have a fun, ryming pattern that is enjoyable to read, even on the 99th repeat. I got this one for my son because he was learning about reptiles at school and was very interested in the subject. This book helped reinforce the details that he had already learned, and helped introduce new facts in a fun and humorous text. I highly recommend this book, along with the other Cat in the Hat titles, for any kid who likes to have fun while learning!!

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-These books aim to introduce beginning readers to basic concepts in an entertaining manner. The author employs familiar characters from Dr. Seuss's "Cat in the Hat" titles to present information showing the diverse range of birds and mammals. The manic parade of rhyming facts, however, is confusing and contrived. Fine Feathered Friends is annoyingly superficial. In Is a Camel a Mammal?, a number of examples prove that mammals come in all sizes, live in many types of environments, and have various eating habits. Two basic facts, however, are mentioned in the glossary but not in the text: that mammal babies feed on their mothers' milk, and that they have backbones. In both books, the cartoon illustrations fail to distinguish among the many creatures. Series such as "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science" (HarperCollins), "Read and Wonder" (Candlewick), and Jim Arnosky's "Crinkleroot" books (S & S) are all better choices.

5Learning to love nature
By Tina V
This book engaged my 4 year old daughter from the moment she saw the cover. The combination of familiar characters (The Cat in the Hat, Sally) and silly Seuss-like rhymes and drawings is a wonderful vehicle for teaching preschoolers simple biology concepts. My daughter laughed while learning about the biggest, smallest, and quirkiest members of the bird family. This book is part of a series that spans birds, fish, mammals, insects, and dinosaurs. As a group, the series is a great tool to teach children about groupings in nature (i.e., what do mammals, insects, birds have in common?, how do they differ?). Even adults can learn a fact or two while reading to the little ones!

4Fine Feathered Friends
By ...Loggie...
In this book the cat in the hat comes back again to visit Dick and Sally, but this time he doesn't create a mess. This time he has come to teach them all about birds. To start off with he talks about birds in general, how they have feathers and a tail and hatch out of eggs. Then he, Thing 1, and Thing 2 take Sally and Dick to different places to introduce them to several different types of birds, such as the spoonbill, emperor penguin, bald eagle, ostrich and more. The cat then leads them all into his Fine Feather, All-Weather Flying Machine, getting them home just in time so that their mother doesn't notice they were gone. This book is very informative, and is written in rhyme. The pictures are bright, bold and colorful. Somehow though, this book fails to capture my attention and hold it, making it not one of the best books I've read by this author.

4Good
By AlbAida
It's a cute little book, keeps my 2 year old pretty interested (although he seems to enjoy more some of the other Cat in the Hat books such: "Oh can you say Dinosaur", "Inside your outside"), maybe he's too little for this one. We'll see in a year or two.

5Excellent first book about space...
By A Customer
What a GREAT book! I was looking for a book for my 3 1/2 year old that would introduce him to space in a simple way, "What's Out There" is exactly what I wanted. He is so captivated by this book, it is short, simple and easy to understand. It is perfect for him now and will be for the next several years. All of the basics are covered such as the 9 planets and their relation to the sun, how the earth travels around the sun and spins, the moon, gravity, the make-up of all the planets, asteroids etc. Each topic is explained in a fun and easy way for a child to understand and the illustrations are wonderful. Highly recommend as a first book about space!
