CHAPTER ONE

Why People Become Network Marketers and Why They Don't

Here are two simple Questions.

First, what is the number-one reason people start a network marketing or party plan business?

The answer is that they started the business because someone asked them. The overwhelming majority of people never considered the business before they were approached.

That is not surprising. Our business is word of mouth. We don't run media campaigns trumpeting our opportunity and we don't advertise in the job opportunities section of the newspaper. Unless and until you connect with your prospects, how will they know how incredible the opportunity is?

Second, what is the number-one reason people don't start a network marketing or party plan business?

And the answer is that nobody asked them! People are not going to come knocking on your door. You have to reach out to them—preferably before someone else does. Believe me, there will be no harsher lesson than seeing someone you could have approached, but didn't, turn up at a corporate event as someone else's star recruit.

Every day, thousands of people who never seriously considered a network marketing business sign an agreement. Luckily for them, they were in the right place at the right time when the right person came along. That person could be you.

Don't prejudge, don't hesitate, and don't hold back. Approach people and talk about the business at every opportunity you get. If an opportunity doesn't present itself, create one. The more people you talk to, the more successful you will be.

All you need is a belief in your products, your opportunity, and courage.

If you have not yet done so, choosing your products will be the easy part. Just about every product now is sold directly. Iconic brands like Avon, which has been in business for more than 120 years, are being joined by household brands like Dove Chocolate;rM, Jockey;rM, and The Body Shop;rM that have traditionally sold retail. Choose a product you can be passionate about and a corporation with a genuine desire to serve you.

No matter how great your products or how much support you get from your corporate partner, your success will be up to you. So, here is the million-dollar question: How much success do you think you deserve? If you don't think you deserve success, you'll find a thousand excuses why it won't happen for you, such as "I'm too young, old, busy, not confident or smart enough, not a salesperson . . ."

Read between the lines and what you really are saying is, "I'm too (busy) so don't expect me to (try)." You're giving yourself a free pass to fail, but "stinking thinking" always comes at a price.

Here is something else to think about. What if you do have what it takes to create an amazing life from your network marketing business, and then give up without giving it your best shot?

There is no penalty for not reaching your goals, so what do you have to lose? Go for it and you may surprise yourself by achieving success beyond your wildest dreams. Give yourself permission to succeed—and to succeed spectacularly. Tell yourself, a thousand times if that is what it takes to believe it, "I want it, I deserve it, and I can do it."

To put yourself out there every day takes courage, and you will almost certainly face a few setbacks. This is when you have to make a choice—to pull into an emotionally handicapped space and stay parked or to drive on regardless. As the famed American writer Mark Twain said in Pudd'nhead Wilson, "Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear—not absence of fear."

If you wait to become confident before you start recruiting, you will waste your best opportunities. Confidence will come once you see the positive impact you can make on others.

If you wait until you have an encyclopedic knowledge of your compensation plan, it may be a long wait. Skills come from practice. The only way to learn to play the guitar is, well, to play the guitar.

It takes courage to build a network marketing business. No matter how nervous you feel, reach out to as many people as you can. Encourage every person you recruit to do the same.

Don't buy into the fiction you don't have what it takes to succeed. Or that it's difficult to find the right people. Or that something may go wrong. If you want it—and believe you deserve it—you can do it.

There are 300 million people living in the United States. A new person is born every seven seconds, and an immigrant enters the country every fourteen seconds. Very few people are living the life of their dreams. You may hold the key. Find the courage to reach out to people every day, knowing you have the power to change lives.

If you lack confidence at the start, turn it to your advantage. Knowing exactly how your new recruits feel when they start out will make you an empathetic leader. When you say, "I know how you feel, I felt the same way," you will be speaking from the heart. A leader who says, "I am still learning too," is a more powerful role model than one who appears flawless. The message you will be communicating is, "If I can do this, you can too."

Put yourself in a room of network marketing achievers and you won't immediately spot an obvious common denominator. Every socioeconomic background, education level, profession, job, ethnicity, race, gender, personality, and age will be represented. You have to look beneath the surface to see what they have in common, which is a belief in the business, the ambition to succeed, and the courage to make it happen.

You can be whoever you want to be, have whatever you want to have, do whatever you want to do. What better way to realize your dreams than to build a party plan or network marketing organization by one person at a time?

3Not the best approach
By M. Morris
I've read about 15 or so books on network marketing and have listened to $200 worth of network marketing CD's and the main thing I have pulled from all this info is that the best way to prospect/recruit is to ask natural questions to your prospect in regard to their lives and then listen intently. This way you will build better relationships, you will gain trust from them and you will find out if they are a legitimate prospect. What this book does is to try and tell you what your prospect is or might be thinking or what their needs might be. This might seem like great knowledge to have but for anyone that is serious about network marketing, this only provides a very simplistic and general preview, much like knowing what is going to be for dinner ahead of time. The problem with this direction of knowledge is that it doesn't provide much obvious applicability and takes the whole discovery process out of the picture. I found the book "too heavy" with do this and do that and say this and say that, which often confuses and overwhelms new network marketing recruits because they don't need to know someone else's niche way of doing it but rather more of a natural fundamental way of network selling based more on a process where everyone can comfortably ease into it. The information in this book I believe is too overwhelming for a new recruit and is more preaching than teaching. If you are struggling in network marketing you need to get back to the fundamentals not fluff ways of doing things. You don't need to dissect every single angle of recruiting or your prospect ahead of time. Three books I have found that really simplify the process of network marketing and empower the individual a bit more (in my opinion) are:

The Greatest Networker In The World by John Milton Fogg
Make Your Contacts Count by Anne Babor and Lynne Waymon
How To Sell Network Marketing by Michael Oliver

Make Your Contacts Count is guided to networking in general but I found a great tool for people who don't have a clue how to run a network marketing business but want to avoid a lot of the early pitfalls, rejection and wasted time of approaching network marketing the wrong way. I believe in teaching your prospects how to fish and not giving them a fish. This book (Be A Recruiting Superstar) is more about giving them a fish, actually more like a crab cake.

5A System to fix your System - (and an Ethical Business Approach)
By SuperFly
In Mary's 1st year of Network Marketing she recruited over 1,000 people. On top of that she's had 25 years of experience in the industry.

What I like about this book is it teaches solid business principles to grow your business. It explains the type of people you want to recruit, how to identify them and how to approach them to build your business.

This book is great at solving one of the problems in Network Marketing today---people who come into the business who haven't owned their own business and are trying the approach of talking to everyone. The 10 principles in chapter 10 can be applied to any type of business. For example, Principle #9 "Recruit with Integrity" is key.

There are a lot of books out there teaching "new methods" and "attraction" marketing. This book teaches you how to become a spokesperson, and an expert so people will come to you without using these new school terms. But, she does identify the number 1 reason people join a network marketing company - someone asked them. This isn't a hard sell though---it's trust.

The book explains the quickest way to grow your business is to contact those you already have trust built relationships with that you have identified would be successful in the business. She writes "Decide before you start calling whom you are looking for and why this person may be interested in your opportunity. You're looking for a connect. When you approach people you know are right for the business, your prospects will see that you genuinely believe you have something to offer them. Always be ready to say, "I called you because . . ."

When you become involved in a network marketing business, it is because you are buying a system to create wealth, time or freedom---if the system your company is currently using is not working for you---this book will help you identify what in that system isn't working and what you need to fix to make it work. Leaders in the company sometimes leave out (not on purpose) important details. This book will give you confidence to try different approaches or identify key elements in your approach and yourself that may be the problem.

To be successful using Mary's system, you need to use the entire system. Do what's first, than what's next, and last only after you've done the other steps.

The key is relationship building and having something of value to offer and being someone people want to work with. The last page says "Don't waste time recruiting people who are better off as customers. Have the courage to recruit only people with whom you will be proud to associate. Bring the wrong people into your organization and you may frighten off promising candidates."

This is "The Fast Track to Network Marketing Millions" so if you have the courage to become a leader, recruit leaders, and grow your business with integrity---you will feel proud of the business you built and people will flock to associate with you, your team and what you have to offer.

4Inspiring Food For Thought
By Wendy Lloyd Curley
As an aspiring Unit Leader for PartyLite Australia, I sought out this book after hearing about it from my upline. I give it a four out of five because I do find the bird analogy too complicated. After five birds I thought we had enough.

That said, I found the book inspired me to think differently about the opportunity I have to offer people. I am inspired to make some changes in the way I approach my business and that is ulitmately what I look for when I read a business book.

I recommend this book for leaders in MLM companies or new recruits looking for leadership.

Now... I think I'll go re-read it and highlight some passages before I loan it out to the team. :) WLC.
