Product Description

Combining your body's Paleolithic needs with modern nutritional and medical research for complete mind-body wellness

• Provides sustainable diet strategies to curb sugar cravings, promote fat burning and weight loss, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep and moods, increase energy and immunity, and enhance memory and brain function

• Shows how our modern diet leads to weight gain and "diseases of civilization"--such as cancer, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and ADD

• Explains how diet affects the brain, hormone balance, and the aging process and the crucial role of vitamin D in cancer and disease prevention

Examining the healthy lives of our pre-agricultural Paleolithic ancestors and the marked decline in stature, bone density, and dental health and the increase in birth defects, malnutrition, and disease following the implementation of the agricultural lifestyle, Nora Gedgaudas shows how our modern grain- and carbohydrate-heavy low-fat diets are a far cry from the high-fat, moderate-protein hunter-gatherer diets we are genetically programmed for, leading not only to lifelong weight gain but also to cravings, mood disorders, cognitive problems, and "diseases of civilization"--such as cancer, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance), heart disease, and mental illness.

Applying modern discoveries to the basic hunter-gatherer diet, she culls from vast research in evolutionary physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, nutrition, and chronic and degenerative disease to unveil a holistic lifestyle for true mind-body health and longevity. Revealing the primal origins and physiological basis for a high-fat, moderate-protein, starch-free diet and the importance of adequate omega-3 intake--critical to our brain and nervous system but sorely lacking in most people's diets--she explains the nutritional problems of grains, gluten, soy, dairy, and starchy vegetables; which natural fats promote health and which (such as canola oil) harm it; the crucial role of vitamin D in cancer and disease prevention; the importance of saturated fat and cholesterol; and how diet affects mental health, memory, cognitive function, hormonal balance, and cellular aging. With step-by-step guidelines, recipes, and meal recommendations, this book offers sustainable strategies for a primally based, yet modern approach to diet and exercise to reduce stress and anxiety, lose weight, improve sleep and mood, increase energy and immunity, enhance brain function, save money on groceries, and live longer and happier.

Editorial Reviews

Review
"With this book, she [Nora Gedgaudas] moves the diet discussion into the world of evolutionary science."
(Anna Jedrziewski, New Age Retailer, March 2011 )

"Nora Gedgaudas is a warrior fighting for our collective health. For 2.6 million years humans knew what to eat: animal fat and protein. On that diet, we grew tall, strong, and disease-free. That primal pattern is still there, laid down like a labyrinth circling out of our DNA, and Nora is ready to guide us. This book is fabulous."
(Lierre Keith, author of The Vegetarian Myth )

"As an investment advisor, I stress the importance of health to my clients and subscribers. Why is that? Because a clear mind and strong body are the first step to creating and keeping your wealth, whether it is personal or financial. Yes, we can understand how our mind and bodies function! Yes, we can feed ourselves the nutritious food that makes us powerful! Nora Gedgaudas's Primal Body, Primal Mind teaches you essential knowledge you need to survive and thrive in the 21st century."
(Catherine Austin Fitts, founder and managing member of Solari Investment Advisory )

"These days, hormones are a hot topic. In Primal Body, Primal Mind, Gedgaudas focuses on those hormones that are commonly imbalanced and problematic to the American population, contributing to symptoms such as weight gain, low energy, poor mood, and even premature aging. In clear and simple terms Nora describes the root of these problems and outlines solutions that are effective and easy to apply. This is the book you want to read."
(Janet R. Lang, D.C., author, educator, and founder of Restorative Endocrinology )

"Primal Body, Primal Mind covers a wide range of health topics but ties them all back to one central idea: physically, we are virtually identical to our Paleolithic ancestors. We may drive minivans and listen to modern jazz on iPods, but our bodies and brains haven't really evolved past the Stone Age. Overall, an excellent read and an excellent resource."
(Tom Naughton, comedian, former health writer, and creator of Fat Head )

"It's a health plan so easy even an unga bunga caveman can do it! Gedgaudas uses humor, science-based facts, and common sense to debunk many of the myths we have been told about weight and health control in the 21st century. In the world of healthy high-fat, low-carb nutrition research and education, this is yet another book to complement your healthy lifestyle change."
(Jimmy Moore, author of Livin' la Vida Low Carb )

"Nora explores where our dietary requirements originated and how they affect our mood and vulnerability to diseases and explains the complex issues of nutrient assimilation, digestion gluten sensitivity, and celiac disease. Find out if you're a fat burner or a sugar burner, learn the bad news about gluten, soy, milk proteins, and the nutritional bases for depression, ADHD, and other common disorders. This book is so much more than another 'what to eat' book."
(Julie Holland, M.D., author of The Pot Book and Weekends at Bellevue )

"Nora Gedgaudas has loaded Primal Body, Primal Mind with the information and resources essential for anyone who hopes to survive the 21st century in mental and physical health."
(Julia Ross, author of The Diet Cure and The Mood Cure and executive director of the Recovery Systems Clinic )

"I consider Nora's work to be the definitive statement on the nutritional needs of the brain. It is required reading for all of my patients and for anyone with an interest in maintaining their own vitality throughout their life."
(Glen Zielinski, D.C., D.A.C.N.B., assistant professor of clinical neurology at Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies )

"Nora Gedgaudas lights a path toward dietary discretion and natural health that obliterates much of the standard dietary doctrine along the way. Larger truths have a tendency to be simple. It is so here as well."
(Siegfried Othmer, Ph.D., coauthor of ADD: The 20-Hour Solution and chief scientist at the EEG Institute )

"If you want to really know about how your brain and body work, read this book!"
(Thom Hartmann, author of The Edison Gene: ADHD and the Gift of the Hunter Child )

From the Author
This new extraordinary edition of Primal Body, Primal Mind has been substantially refined, updated, meticulously scientifically edited and reformatted with extra chapters and new additional illustrations.  The few nay-saying comments posted to this site are mostly based on the earlier edition of this book which lacked the current edition's refinement.

No one book can possibly please everybody--and Primal Body, Primal Mind challenges a lot of comfortable assumptions (even slaying and barbequing a few sacred cows along the way)---but most of those who found fault with the previous edition will find their complaints here can no longer apply.  In fact, I've used much of the prior constructive criticism as a helpful tool to elevate Primal Body, Primal Mind to a whole new standard of excellence.

I am quite proud of this new edition.  I hope you enjoy it.

5Primal tools for the (almost) modern human
By T. Naughton
Primal Body-Primal Mind covers a wide range of health topics - nutrition, metabolism, exercise, weight loss, vitamins and supplements, depression and other emotional issues - but ties them all back to one central idea: physically, we are virtually identical to our Paleolithic ancestors. We may drive minivans and listen to modern jazz on iPods, but our bodies and brains haven't really evolved past the stone-tools era. Your great-grandfather to the 10th power thrived on particular foods and types of exercise (although he never called it that), and so will you.

Nora obviously ploughed through an enormous amount of research to write this book, and she summarizes it quite nicely. She explains biochemical concepts clearly, while managing to sneak in a bit of humor here and there - always a plus with me. I enjoy a book when the information is dense, but the writing style isn't.

The sections dealing depression and alcoholism are especially eye-opening. We've been told over and over that these are mental or spiritual conditions. Perhaps they are ... but perhaps they are caused or at least aggravated by the wrong diet as well.

Overall, an excellent read and an excellent resource.

5One of my favorite books in the genre to date
By Jack Leishman
Substance, science and humor; what a great combination to put into a book on a subject that has the potential to touch so many in ways that, ironically, most people in our culture are not even remotely aware of. Being a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I have lots of books on my shelf that extol the value of eating nutrient dense foods, prepared properly for maximizing and enhancing the available nutrients. I also have scores of books and articles on how our physiology deals with these nutrients and what happens when good nutrition is lacking or absent. To date, none of what I have and what I've read comes close to comparing with Nora's excellent Primal Body - Primal Mind in terms of clearly explaining how what we take into our bodies affects our cells, our various systems and our whole being. This is a compendium of information, written in a very easily readable form that covers the gamut of what one needs to know to be truly healthy from the point of view of what we eat. Each chapter of her book could be a stand-alone reference guide on a particular aspect of good nutritional health. She has a way of telling a story and wrapping it up in deeply and clearly researched facts, data and information, and presenting it in a way that is readable, fun, poignant, eye opening and sometimes "catch-your-breath" scary. I'm reminded somewhat of one of the first science writers I was introduced to, many years ago, who put things together in a similar way - Isaac Asimov. This is a book that I will share with as many people as I can because I think it has the possibility to really change lives. If I had the skills, knowledge and experience that Nora has, this is the book I would want to write.

4Stop wasting your money on the lies of mass media- and READ THIS BOOK!!!!
By One More Enthusiastic Grass-fed All-star
I've been eating according to Nora's book for the past 2.5 months now and have experienced less mood swings, more sustained energy (!!!!), less food cravings, and most surprisingly, consistent menstrual cycles. My whole life I've been both health conscious and athletically active. I've never had to worry about "counting calories", or spending "untold hours in the gym" as Nora puts it. I don't fit the mold of most people who go out to buy books on improving their diet.

I've lived my whole life in a constant state of hunger. I would eat a "healthy" breakfast of grains and oats, and then be STARVING by 10:30AM. I would then eat large quantities of greens, tofu, beans, and bread for lunch. Again, two hours later, I would be ready to eat my own arm. I just figured it was because of my high metabolism. And perhaps I do have a high metabolism. What I DO know is that when I started following Nora's advice, this hunger went away. I realized that there were SO many items in my diet that didn't belong. Tofu in large quantities, sugar, and a nearly complete lack of meat. I have since re-incorporated meat into my diet-- grass-fed, happy, healthy cow meat. And the results are better than I expected. My body is operating optimally with little to no other lifestyle change. If anything, I have had MORE energy to enjoy numerous physical activities throughout the day plus a demanding full-time job. My mood swings have altered, my hormones are leveling out... and I'm sure there's more to come. It's only been 2 months.

I now tell everyone about this book- seriously. Stop wasting your money on the lies of mass media.
