From the Inside Flap
There is a sleeping dragon at the heart of the financial system. Soon the beast will awake and rear its terrible head, and we will look back on the days of the subprime disaster with nostalgia. In this riveting book by oil industry expert Kent Moors, you will meet the dragon he refers to as oil vega, and you'll discover why it poses such a grave threat to world economic and political stability.

Those familiar with the options and currency markets will recognize vega as the term traders use to denote the rate of price volatility. Expanding upon that traditional usage, Moors coined the expression oil vega to describe the dramatic increase of price volatility seen in the oil markets over the past several years. In The Vega Factor, he describes how, contrary to popular belief, the current environment of runaway volatility in the markets is not the work of diminishing reserves, manipulation by oil producing nations, or increased competition among nations. Rather, it is a result of a structural flaw in the trading system itself.

Oil futures contracts, Moors explains, while once a valuable source of liquidity and price stability, have exceeded their historic mandate, leading to an upending of the traditional relationship between "wet barrels" and "paper barrels." With oil now as much a financial asset as a commodity, and an oil derivatives market currently worth thousands of times more than the world's combined oil reserves, a perverse dynamic has evolved in which the price of crude chases the price of paper barrels in a race it can never win. In some of the most gripping passages of the book, Moors considers the global mayhem and destruction that will likely result from an ongoing failure by policymakers and industry to peg the value of oil—literally the fuel that drives industrialized economies—to anything more tangible than the greed, fear, and superstition of financial speculators.

In the closing chapters of The Vega Factor, Moors explores ways in which oil companies, governments, and traders must revise their priorities vis-à-vis oil, as well as the radically new strategic understanding of energy that will be required if we are to meet market realities in an age of oil vega. He also suggests steps consumers and investors can take to protect themselves against the depredations of oil price volatility.

We live in a world where the quality of everyone's life and the economic stability of every nation are directly tied to the price of oil. Read The Vega Factor and get to know the face of the dragon that even now is beginning to stir at the heart of global financial systems.

The true causes of runaway volatility in the price of oil and its dire economic and geopolitical implications

Oil is the lubricant that keeps the modern world spinning on its axis. From the food we eat and the clothes we wear, to our means of transportation, and even the medications that keep us alive, every facet of our lives is dependent upon a steady supply of affordable crude. In The Vega Factor, oil industry expert and political scientist Kent Moors reveals how a deep structural flaw at the heart of the global financial system currently threatens to end the flow of affordable oil. He describes the grave economic and geopolitical implications of out-of-control price volatility in the oil markets—what he refers to as oil vega—and he offers his prescriptions for what governments, industry, and the financial sector can do to address the mounting threat of oil vega, before it's too late.

5Extremely timely.
By danrt2
I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an advance copy of Dr. Kent Moors' book, The Vega Factor. Having followed him for a number of years now, through both his commentary as an oil and gas analyst and his more recent stock market analysis, I knew that he would be presenting a rather novel approach to the discussion of the oil market. Boy, does he ever. His book provides insight into the market that only a veteran of the oil market can, while simultaneously anticipating what is just around the corner. Not only does this provide the reader with a deeper understanding of how the market has worked in the past, but more importantly the work does a wonderful job of making clear precisely why the old risk models simply will not work any longer. As a follower of all commodities markets in general, and the oil and gas markets in particular, I find that Dr. Moors' book cuts through much of the mystery of why oil markets have been so volatile lately. More importantly, he predicts - very convincingly - that this new market reality is here to stay for the foreseeable future. I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking to understand how oil markets will work moving forward, as well as those currently in the industry who may be searching for additional insight from an oil market expert possessing the keen intellectual ability to stay ahead of the curve.

5Challenges the read to think outside the box
By E. Paradis
I originally thought this book was about the future of oil and the oil Markets. It's actually much more complicated and wide ranging than that. The book threads together aspects of the ongoing financial crisis and highlights key features that are not commonly acknowledged by Market participants as to the origins and future of our global financial crisis.

Anyone trading Global Macro absolutely needs to read this book. Curious followers of the Markets, policy, and those looking for an edge in trading the Markets in todays environment need this book. Kent Moors provides a unique context and ongoing framework for the global financial crisis which is unique and insightful. Readers will be rewarded.
